Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is prepping a bug fix update to Papers, the document viewer that replaced Evince in 25.04, resolving several annoyances – including internal PDF links that jumped to the wrong page.
The internal link snafu only occurred in some PDFs, not all, and typically took you to a page one off the actual target. Annoying. The fix stops two separate bits of code that both tried to set the zoom level when links jumped to fit-width or fit-page view.
A knock-on quirk also saw the alt + p shortcut (which will jump back to the previous page) wouldn’t return after a problematic link was clicked.
Other issues were also addressed.
Scrolling quickly through image-heavy PDFs and CBZs often resulted in blanks pages flying past until you stopped scrolling completely – albeit only when fractional scaling was active. Here, the scaling calculations used during rendering were to cause.
Sticking with scroll-related snafus, using pinch-to-zoom gestures on a touchpad sometimes triggered unexpected scrolling – like jumping straight to the end of the document). A GTK bug is the root cause, but a workaround was found to cancel kinetic scrolling when zooming.
Jittery text on fractional scaling systems and odd looking icon sizes for the Pencil icon (part of the annotations features Papers added earlier this year) also see remedial tweaks. Lower-level quirks and a security patch make it in too.
If any of these bugs were bugging you, they’ll soon be sorted. The Papers 50.2 update is set to roll as a standard software update in the coming days. No exotic steps needed to get it; Software Updater will notify you once it’s ready to install.
