Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 4 brings SDL3, and prefers Wayland on Linux

Minecraft is set for another big update with a fresh Minecraft 26.3 Snapshot 4 ready for testing, and overall it’s quite a big technical upgrade.

They have finally moved on from the ancient GLFW which hasn’t seen a release since early 2024, up to the modern cross-platform SDL3 library to power window management, input and platform integration. This might even potentially open them up to also finally sorting out proper gamepad support for Minecraft Java. Here’s to hoping on that anyway.

They’ve also changed the game to use Borderless Fullscreen as the default now too, with swapping between that and Exclusive Fullscreen no longer needing a game reboot.

On the Linux side, it will also now prefer Wayland natively where available on your system. Always nice to see popular games like this keep up with the modernisation of Linux with Wayland instead of X11 / XWayland.

There’s been a lot of really interesting stuff going on with Minecraft lately, it’s pleasing to see that at least this one game under Microsoft’s ownership is doing well. It most likely prints money still though so not really surprising.
