Open-world zombie survival sandbox Unturned source code released

The popular open world zombie sandbox survival game Unturned just had the source code officially released.

Unturned originally released on Steam back in 2017, and it remains very active with peak player counts each day of over 10,000 people which is impressive for an older indie game like this. Being free to play and sticking around with updates for so long has certainly helped.

And now, with the source code released on GitHub, modders can have-at-it and mostly do whatever they want with it. The game is not open source though, it has its own license, but in the FAQ the developer mentioned their intention to hopefully get it under the MIT license eventually. As they said: “Ideally, once we finish another game and are hopefully able to re-acquire certain rights, we’d like to re-license the U3 SDK under the MIT License”

Either way, it still relies on Unity – a proprietary game engine. Still, nice to see more developers choose to be more open.

Speaking about the release the developers said: “Unturned’s greatest strength has always been its community. We’re deeply grateful for the passion, creativity, and support you’ve shown over the years. We’re proud to place the future of the game in your hands, and excited to see what you’ll build next!”

They still plan to continue updating the game, with the source code kept up to date with it.
